Sarah slumped onto the threadbare couch, the springs groaning in protest. The cheap apartment was dim, the blinds perpetually drawn against the harsh sunlight that seemed to mock her. A half-eaten container of instant noodles sat on the chipped coffee table, a testament to her skipped dinner the night before. She scrolled through her emails, a dull ache pulsing behind her eyes. Then, she saw it: a notification from the online magazine she’d been desperately trying to break into. Not the acceptance she hoped for. The editor's email thanked her for her contribution, but also mentioned a publishing error: her article, the one she'd poured her heart into, had been published under the name of a senior staff writer. Her fingers went numb.

She stared blankly at the screen, a heavy weight settling in her chest. The injustice of it all throbbed, a dull echo of the exhaustion that clung to her like a second skin.

A wave of nausea washed over her. She pushed herself upright, the effort requiring a conscious decision. This was just another setback. Another brick wall. Another reason to surrender.
